The number of slits per metre on the grating, N = 1/ d where d is the grating spacing.įor a given order and wavelength, the smaller the value of d, the greater the angle of diffraction. Rearranging this equation gives the diffraction grating equation for the angle of diffraction of the nth order beam dsin θ = n λ Substituting d for QP and nd for QY therefore gives sin θ = nλ /d. the centre-to-centre distance d between adjacent slits). Since the angle of diffraction of the beam, θ, is equal to the angle between the wavefront and the plane of the slits, it follows that sin θ = QY/QI where QP is the grating spacing (i.e. Therefore the perpendicular distance QY from the slit to the wavefront is equal to nλ, where λ is the wavelength of the light waves. This earlier wavefront therefore must have travelled a distance of n wavelengths from the slit. The wavefront emerging from slit P reinforces a wavefront emitted n cycles earlier by the adjacent slit Q. The diagram above shows the formation of a wavefront of the n thorder beam. The effect is to form a new wavefront PYZ which travels in a certain direction and contributes to the first order diffracted beam. This results in only the ‘orders’ of light being viewed.Īs each diffracted wavefront emerges from a slit, it reinforces a wavefront from each of the adjacent slits.įor example, in the diagram, the wavefront emerging at P reinforces the wavefront emitted from Q one cycle earlier, which reinforces the wavefront emitted from R one cycle earlier, etc. Where crests meet or troughs meet there is reinforcement ( constructive interference) – where a crest and tough meet there is cancellation ( destructive interference ). The diffracted waves then interfere with each other. Fortunately, by the time my wife arrived from the Wynn/Encore meeting rooms, her Chard was warm enough to enjoy. She said that they kept the whites at about 40F, which certainly seemed to be the case here, and around the corner at Jardin too. We then got into a discussion on the serving temp for white wines, and the bartender conjectured that most visitors to Las Vegas have the assumption (incorrect in my mind) that all white wines should be served near freezing – these two glasses were close to that. The bartender looked at me with curiosity in her eyes, and I explained that my wife was joining me, and that if we got her Chardonnay poured now, it would be at a better temp, when she arrived. The Eastside Lounge features strong drinks, good service, and class without stuffiness. About the time that arrived (too cold, as per usual), I got a text that my wife’s meeting had gotten out early, and that she would like to join me, so I ordered a second Chardonnay. The Eastside Lounge at Encore is the perfect place to grab a drink either pre-dinner or post-show. When the bar was set up, I ordered a glass of the Lioco Sonoma Chardonnay, from the B-T-G wine list. The attire at Eastside Lounge is resort casual tank tops and swimwear are not permitted. from Sunday -Thursday and from 9:30 pm 2:30 am Friday and Saturday. Dueling Piano entertainment is from 9:30 p.m. This sleek poolside nightspot also features a full selection of distinctive spirits, wines and beers. Settle into a comfy lounge chair or sofa at Eastside Lounge, where the elevated sense of luxury extends to the hand-crafted cocktail selection as well. The other bar was not being opened yet, and there was no seating in that center section – just at the bar, where I was seated. Eastside Lounge is open Sunday Thursday, 6:00 p.m. 3131 S Las Vegas BlvdLas Vegas, NV 89109. In the evenings, part of that area is also set up for live music, and I have even seen folk dancing. Now, the Eastside Lounge is basically a linear pair of bars right beside the casino floor, with an indoor/outdoor seating area in between those, with that outside area being near the Encore pool. She had dropped off the wine list, on one of her many trips past me, so I had already begun some light reading, and planning. I almost stopped along the way, but then had a thought, “Hey, I like the Eastside Lounge in the Wynn, and they have a fair wine list,” so declared “Wine Thirty.” The Eastside Lounge bar was just being set up on the side closest to the reception desk, so I pulled up a stool, and waited for the bartender to declare that she was open. On a cool and breezy October morning, I had walked from the Encore to the Four Seasons for breakfast, and on the way back, decided to find a glass of wine. 8/31/2023 0 Comments Painting plaster artThese questions include: When were surfaces plastered? Why were certain colors used? Where did the colors come from? Preparation That said, many of the questions about why people plastered surfaces remain unanswered. Mesa Verde has been set aside as a national park and World Heritage Site – an international recognition from UNESCO, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – to preserve cultural resources left by the Ancestral Puebloan people.Īrcheologists continue to research and preserve plaster in the park today. Two common colors of plastered surfaces at Mesa Verde are a rusty red and a pale tan or white. And when preserved, plaster and other design elements are used by archeologists and anthropologists to answer questions about the ancient use of plaster. Fertile soils are used for growing crops and mineral rich soils can be used in products such as plaster and paint. The way the soil ingredients are mixed can vary from place to place and have significant impact on how the soil is used by plants, animals and people. Clay is slippery or slick when wet and sticks together when it dries. Silt is finer than sand and can have the consistency of flour, but it is still a little gritty and doesn’t stick together like clay. Soil is a mixture of sand, silt, clay, air, water, organic material (living and dead life) and minerals. So what is soil? And what makes it such a versatile resource for all cultures? For starters, it is more than just dirt. Some colors in plaster are vegetable based, but most plasters and paint colors at Mesa Verde are derived from various soil and mineral sources. And for the most part, plastered surfaces continue to erode from most exterior and interior surfaces left exposed to wind, snow, people, animals and rain. Plaster was used in European frescos, for example (see “Fresco Plaster” sidebar below).Īt Mesa Verde, plaster is important to the park because the “plastered surfaces record a sequence of symbolic and stylistic changes that cannot be assessed through any other means,” according to Julie Bell, a park archeologist.įor park visitors, plastered surfaces are hard to see (or imagine) because some plaster colors used by Ancestral Puebloan people blend in with the walls in alcove and mesa top sites. Once applied, plaster can be painted with murals and other symbols that are important to various cultures. Despite that destruction, plaster remains an important part of the history, beauty and mystique of Mesa Verde’s cliff dwellings, pueblos and kivas.ĭictionaries define plaster as “a pasty composition … that hardens on drying and is used for coating walls, ceilings, and partitions.” The verb plaster can also mean the process of covering. Many of us overlook the connection between soil and plaster because, like much of the earth’s topsoil, plaster at Mesa Verde National Park has been lost to erosion. “ Painted plaster surfaces have been amazingly preserved at many of Mesa Verde National Park’s signature cliff dwelling sites, much more so than at many other Ancestral Puebloan sites in the Southwestern United States.” - Julie Bell Mesa Verde Archeologist What can archeologists learn from studying plasters about the Ancestral Puebloan people and their artwork? Background By the end of the lesson, they will be able to answer the question: They also act as archeologists and use the scientific method to explain how the Ancestral Pueblo people used soil to make plaster and paint. In this lesson, students use soil to create their own plaster artwork. Plaster and paint are integral parts of archeological research at Mesa Verde. He and Suletta trade flurries of beams, and the latter’s flight suit is damaged. He even predicted this would be his last duel, judging from Bel’s reports on his testing. It looks bad for Suletta, but she has an advantage Elan doesn’t: time.Įlan has to continually up his Permet Score to maintain his edge, which takes a toll on his already depleted body. The entire school is watching, including Guel from his new home-a tent in the woods (I’ll admit to laughing out loud as this uncommented-on development, and part of me hoped Shimarin or Honda Tooru would show up). Perhaps they know that they need every edge they can get against Suletta and Aerial. Once again the corporate bigwigs-in this case Peil-arranged for unfair conditions. This further rankles an Elan already understandably frustrated by his lot in life from his perspective he has absolutely nothing, while Suletta has everything, and yet still wants more from him, and won’t let him have this victory.Ī thrilling space battle ensues, with both Aerial and Pharact’s Bit Control Systems dueling, and the latter suit’s superior mobility creating a long-range disadvantage for Suletta and her jury-rigged unit. But we know better her singing briefly brought his hazy memory into focus.īut the die is cast, and the next day the duel unfolds as planned, with Suletta announcing that her stake is that if she wins, Elan has to tell her all about himself. She’s put over house-wide loudspeakers calling out to Elan, asking if he meant everything he said, and then singing him “Happy Birthday.” He only calls her to tell her to go home, saying he has no birthday. Suletta snaps out of it and gets back to testing, then afterwards visits Peil House insisting to speak to Elan. Miorine is out there assisting with Nana, and gives her bridegroom a bit of tough love, as well as reflect back Suletta’s “move forward, gain two” credo. I suspect the memories of his past life have been subordinated by the Permet conditioning.ĭuring flight testing out in open space, Suletta is down in the dumps, feeling dumb and annoying after Elan’s hurtful words. The “Elan” we’ve known thus far is no villain, only a pawn and victim, though he apparently volunteered for this with the promise he’d get his “face” back and a citizens ID should he prevail. He’s every bit the smug, privileged aristocrat you’d imagine would be heading up Peil House, and is the rightful recipient of a future face-punch from Chuchu, Miorine, and/or even Suletta herself. Meanwhile, Elan undergoes more lonely testing and his blurry recurring image of a candle is interrupted by a surprise visitor in Elan … the real Elan Ceres. I can only imagine Suletta’s mom didn’t provide her such a unit because she was confident her daughter would make the necessary connections. Led by Nana’s cautiously-can-do attitude, they scrounge around scrap and spare parts to cobble together a flight unit for Aerial. She and Elan meet for pre-duel formalities, but she has yet to decide her stakes.Įarth House know theirs: the 2.7-to-1 odds they’ll enjoy if Suletta wins. He leaves with his head held high, having done what he (and I believed) to be the right thing in standing up for Suletta. While Earth House reconsiders their opinion on Elan in light of his treatment of their new housemate, Guel is thrown out of House Jeturk and cut off from all but the remaining school tuition. She asks Prospera why she’s using her daughter as an instrument of revent, but Bel retorts by asking “how many” Gundam pilots there have been before Elan.
